August 13 - August 18, 2017, Overland Park, Kansas
In partnership with the Overland Park Visitors Bureau, City of Overland Park Convention Center, Sheraton Overland Park Hotel, Marine Corps League Midwest Division and Marine Corps Department of Kansas, and the officers of the General Larry Oppenheimer Detachment and M/SGT Luis Romero, Jr. Auxiliary Unit we are honored to host the 2017 National Marine Corps Convention.
Kansas City is centrally-located, rich in military history dating back to the Civil war, abundance of leisure activities, a city that embraces the arts, and we are dedicated to the success of the Marine Corps League.
Harold Larry Oppenheimer was a retired brigadier general in the Marine Corps and Chairman of Oppenheimer Industries Inc., a cattle land management, and investment company based in Kansas City, Mo.
A Harvard anthropology major ('39) he graduated cum laude at 19, then set off for Bolivia and Peru.
Attracted to the rugged life, he dropped plans for his Ph.D. and joined the Marines. The General became, at 23, the youngest battalion commander in the Corps. General Oppenheimer, who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, wrote of his combat experiences in the book entitled, ''March to the Sound of the Drums.''
